Women in Commercial Construction

Green Heart Enterprises is proud to be a woman-owned and operated business in what has conventionally been a male-dominated industry. As we look to the future we see a shift in the construction industry towards a more diverse workforce, including a more balanced ratio of men and women in the sector.

Today, you can find women working across building sites with their male co-workers, supervising staff, leading projects and departments, and running their own construction companies. We continue to see women excel in leadership positions in the construction industry.

State of the Industry

The construction industry is brimming with opportunities for women with the right skills and capabilities. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the construction industry will add about 400,000 new jobs from 2020-2030. With adequate training and skills, women can achieve major success by investing in the field.

Despite the growing opportunity, there are key challenges for women in the construction field. There is a gender pay gap, and some women may experience gender bias or exclusion. Several other factors, such as labor-intensive work and lack of safety, further keep women from pursuing construction jobs. It has also been reported that there is less opportunity for advancement for women in the industry. The bright side is that gender-diverse commercial construction companies continue to increase and as these barriers are highlighted, more companies can ensure they are addressing them head-on.

Even as the ongoing labor shortage in the industry presents an opportunity for more women to join the construction industry, there is work to be done to fully include women. Companies will have to acknowledge and remove gender biases to increase recruitment and improve retention. Training programs and mentorship from women already established in the industry are critical elements to encourage women to consider the trade. Including women in the hiring process will also help highlight viable career paths for those looking to join the construction workforce.
